The transfer talk at Liverpool in recent weeks has been dominated by outgoings, specifically the deals that could take both Fabinho and Jordan Henderson to Saudi Arabia.
Both were curveballs for Jurgen Klopp and the Anfield hierarchy, and the possibility of one (or both) deals happening begs the question: how will they affect incomings?
We analyse the big issues the club will need to address in the final five weeks of the transfer window…
How many midfielders do Liverpool need to sign?
If Fabinho and Jordan Henderson both leave, then ideally Liverpool need to replace the pair of them — but getting one signing through the door is a priority. Even with Fabinho’s move to Al Ittihad now in jeopardy, a defensive midfielder still feels like a must-buy for Liverpool regardless.
Going into next season without one, or relying on Fabinho given his decline last term, could prove costly.
There is a young core of midfielders at the club. Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones and Stefan Bajcetic have all proven themselves and will be eager to notch as many minutes as possible, but that does leave Liverpool lacking experience.
Following the departures of James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, if Fabinho and Henderson both leave, this would mean Thiago, a player who has been hampered by injury setbacks, would become the most senior midfielder at the club. This, in turn, would place a lot more pressure on Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai to hit the ground running.
